Department also conducts in house projects for the students.  under the guidance of Dr. Manoja Dash  on Physio chemical and Biological characteristics of water bodies in and around Gunupur, Production of Chitinase enzymes from microorganisms. The students collect water from different sources to  detect both pathogenic and non pathogenic organisms and discover of new strains .

The Department has started a project on Jatropha entitled Research trials on fuel future "Jatropha curcus. The project is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi. The dried seeds of the plant are used as source of Bio fuel and the rest of the plant products are used for isolating fats and different alkaloids to produce beneficial products. The government has already allotted 100 acres of land for mass cultivation of Jatropha and its different species. The department has involved the students to carry out this Research, under the guidance of the  Sr.Lecturer, Dr. Alekha Ghadai.

Vermiculture a part of Environmental Biotechnology is now applied by the department under the guidance of  Mr. G.K Mohanty. It is a Societal -missionary oriented project, entitled " Effect of earthworms  in agro- ecosystem of Gunupur ". sponsored by Ministry of Health, Orissa. Its main purpose is to degrade the  wastes released from various house holds and small industries so as to improve the quality of soil for farmers. The Earthworms are collected, grown  & tested for their effect on agro ecosystems and alterations on physiO chemical properties of soil. The earthworms are monitored  for their feeding and casting activity on corn, waste foods, mixed grasses, etc  and it was found a great improvement of soil structure and composition. . Currently the project is applied for commercial purposes

Based on the true fact about the active role of bio therapeutics compared with chemical therapeutics, the demand of the drugs  and the availability of the medicinal plants at & around  Gunupur,  with no delay the department has started a research on Identification of medicinal plants  &  isolation products using various biotechnological techniques to combat new variety of diseases and applying it on disease causing pathogens.  Mr. Sudip Sen is incharge of this project and it is collaborated with Munich technical univeristy, Germany, under the valuable guidance of Dr. Herbert Riepl
